[trip hop, electronica, pop-rock, folk, folk-pop]

If you're like me, then you never get tired of collecting fresh, mellow tunes to keep you company after a long day, during a road trip, or while you're working on that vile mid-term paper that just won't write itself at 4 o' clock in the morning. Well, here's a compilation of music brought to you by femme fatale's, both old and new, that know how to soothe your soul — no matter the cause. But if you are home — kick off your shoes, brew a cup of coffee, and chill the heck out.

P.S. Be sure to check out song #9, Blood-Letting! P A S T E L will be conducting an interview with local Athenian, Kristine Leschper, regarding her musical influences, inspiration, and process in the near weeks to come!

  1. Angie Hart – Blue
This one goes out to all of you die hard Buffy groupies out there. The song was actually a collaboration between the creator of the show, Joss Whedon, and Hart who mentioned in a past interview that (due to mutual shyness) they “wrote the song [by] passing pieces of paper across the table back and forth to each other”.

  2. Widowspeak – In the Pines
I think that I'm attracted to this band for the crooning voice of Molly Hamilton, who, in my opinion, is somewhat comparable to Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval. Speaking of . . .

  3. Mazzy Star – Flowers In December
This song has always been a favorite of mine.

  4. Mojave 3 – Love Songs on The Radio
Now I know that Mojave 3 isn't an all female band, but Rachel Goswell carries her own in the trio, so the song belongs. And to prove her worth, the next song is off of her solo record.

  5. Rachel Goswell – Coastline (Vinyl Version)
Step 1. Find an open road
Step 2. Roll the windows down
    Step 3. Press play
    Step 4. Drive

    You'll understand what I mean.

  6. Splendid – You and Me
Alrightyou caught me. Here's another song by Angie Hart from her years performing under the name Splendid with former husband, Jesse Tobias.

  1. *Azure Ray – Sleep
Can't sleep? Maria and Orenda understand. Here's a song to get you through those endless nights. Fun fact: Though they're from Birmingham, the duo started Azure Ray in Athens!

  2. BOY – Skin and Drive Darling
I love the simple brusqueness of their sound. I personally prefer the live version of this song, so here ya go.

Wait, I have to include one more.

  3. *Madeline Adams – Dollar Beer
Another Athenian, folks! If you like what you hear, check out her album, The Slow Bang

  4. Air – Cherry Blossom Girl
So, this song is performed by artists, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel (known for the score music heard in Sofia Coppola's 2000 film, The Virgin Suicides). I included the song because they collaborated with Hope Sandoval to make a slower version (and because it's friggin' catchy). Ultimately, Hope's cover didn't fit with the rest of their album Talkie Walkie, but Dunckel is quoted as having said that it "is very special to [him]". I put up both versions, so that you can decide which you prefer!

  5. *Mothers – Blood Letting
Listen to the enchanting voice of local, Kristine Leschper, and get pumped about our upcoming interview!

  6. Portishead – Roads
Finishing up with another slow,  trip-hop beat for those of you still stuck in the 90's (like me). It's eery, but surprisingly enough, makes for great study ambience.
